Xbox design leaked
Unauthorized scans of Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine's February Xbox feature -- including photographs of the final Xbox and controller design -- were released on the Internet today.
The photos show a black box with a slightly domed top, inset with a bright green circle emblazoned with the Xbox logo. Controllers are similarly adorned, and resemble Sega's Dreamcast controllers.
Lawyers from Microsoft quickly had the images taken down in advance of the Xbox's official unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this week.
[Editors' note: As professional journalists, we find Microsoft's demands that the images be removed a disturbing form of press interference. In the interests of journalistic freedom, Geartest.com has made the Xbox images available here. We will not display the Electronic Gaming Monthly scans in their entirety so as not to violate that publication's copyright].
Microsoft recruiting Xbox testers
Microsoft wants a few good men... or women... or boys... or girls. The Redmond, Washington giant is looking for people to test new game hardware and software for both the PC and the Xbox, and they have set up a recruitment page on their site to do it.
Although there is no financial compensation, Microsoft emphatically promises players they will "Get free stuff!" and that "all individuals scheduled for a study will be given their choice of gratuity for participating." The exact nature of the gratuity is not specified, but the online application form is headed, "Play our new games and we'll give you FREE games!"
There is no word on whether applicants must sell their souls to Bill Gates for this privilege.
